| FICQ donated $116, 232 to assist Queensland flood victimsBrisbane, 17 April 2011 — Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland (FICQ) responded to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal and donated a total of $116, 232 to assist the victims of recent flood in Queensland.On 17th April 2011 at INDOZ Sikh Communities Centre, several cheques to the value of $67, 621 were presented by FICQ to the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Minister for Transport and Multicultural Affairs, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Premier.The reminder of the donations $35, 611 was already sent directly to the Premier by some of the member organizations of FICQ. Two non-FICQ members; Malayalee Association of Sydney and United Indian Association of Sydney made generous donations of $7,000 and $6,000, respectively.Mr. Prasad in his speech thanked FICQ member associations for providing fantastic support to the victims of the recent flood and providing food to the volunteers during the flood. He also stated that we exceeded our target of raising $100, 000.
Member associations of FICQ raised money through individual donations, conducting cultural activities (eg. Sponsorship of artists by the Government of India and Indian High Commission in Canberra), and dinner nights. Mr. Prasad said “on behalf of FICQ members I would like to extend our gratitude to the organising committee and members of Indoz Sikh Community for inviting FICQ to their 1st anniversary of the Sikh INDOZ Community Centre at Inala and on the 312th annual celebration of Vaisakhi (the Sikh New Year) to present donation cheques to the Minister.” FICQ (www.ficq.info) is the umbrella body consisting of 24 Indian organisations, which represent people of Indian origin from mainland India, Fiji, South Africa, Malaysia etc, now living in Queensland. |
